NEgative Space
The Negative Space project is a collection of digital negatives that are a modern reinterpretation of the traditional black-and-white photographic process. These images invert the tones of reality, creating an abstraction that challenges the viewer to engage with the photograph in a deeper, more thoughtful way.
By reversing the tonal values of the scene, our focus shifts away from the expected visual elements, prompting us to pay attention to the shapes, textures, and contrasts that might otherwise go unnoticed in a conventional photograph.
This inversion removes the familiar context of how we typically perceive light and shadow, forcing the viewer to confront the fundamental components of composition such as form, structure, and contrast, instead of relying on traditional representations of the subject.
What was once familiar becomes unfamiliar, encouraging a more reflective and intentional interaction with the image. The abstraction transforms everyday scenes into striking compositions, where light and dark are exaggerated, giving new life to even the most ordinary of subjects.
